Valve confirms it won’t restock Steam Gift Cards

Valve has confirmed it is halting production of new Steam Gift Cards, meaning that once the current stock at retailers runs out, the digital cards will be the only remaining option to gift people money to spend on Steam.

The news was spotted by an user in the PC gaming subreddit earlier today, highlighting an updated entry in the Steam Gift Cards FAQ on Valve’s site. Now, the question of whether a customer can purchase Steam Gift Cards from retailers is responded with, “yes, but only for a limited time.”

Valve then goes on to explain its reasoning behind the decision. In essence, scammers have been using the gift cards as a scamming method for years. The company has attempted to counter this over time, working with retailers and law enforcement, limiting redemption to be in the currency of your Steam wallet, and adding a prominent scam warning, amid other actions.

Yet, it seems Valve has been unable to keep up, as “scammers have adapted.” The company says they continue to have an impact on Steam customers and unsuspecting individuals. This, as a result, has led to ending the Steam Gift Card program at retail stores.

“As Steam Gift Cards run out of stock at retail locations, we will not be restocking them,” reads the FAQ. “We expect all retailers to be out of stock by the end of 2026. Though we will no longer be selling physical gift cards, you will still have the ability to use your existing gift cards on Steam whenever you choose, subject to local laws.”
