Kabam consolidating LA office and making layoffs

Marvel Contest of Champions developer Kabam is consolidating its office in Los Angeles in a move that has resulted in an unknown number of layoffs.

A Kabam spokesperson confirmed the move to Game Developer but declined to comment on the job cuts.

“Following a review of strategic priorities, Kabam made the decision to consolidate its LA office and streamline operations,” reads the statement. “This wasn’t a decision made lightly and the company remains focused on its slate and committed to its partners.”

One person who spent over five years working at Kabam’s office in LA indicated their role has been eliminated in a post on LinkedIn earlier this week.

Kabam first expanded into LA in 2015 by acquiring local studios Tapzen and Magic Pixel Games and merging them into a new Kabam-branded studio in Culver City. At the time, company leadership said the mobile specialist intended to strengthen its “deep” relationships with Hollywood partners.

South Korean publisher Netmarble acquired Kabam’s Vancouver studio and assets including Marvel Contest of Champions in 2016. Kabam’s remaining studios were spun off into a new entity called Aftershock.

Netmarble US was rolled into Kabam in 2022, once again bringing an LA studio into the fold (thanks, PG.biz).
