There’s a new version of the Switch 2 headed to Europe. Nintendo has stated it will comply with new EU regulations regarding replaceable batteries, due to take hold in February of next year.
According to a notice on its corporate site, the company is ready to go along with a new rule that batteries “…integrated into certain appliances and sold in the EU must be easily replaceable by end-users at any time during the lifetime of the product.”
To that end, Nintendo is working on a version of the console that allows players to “easily replace” a Switch 2 battery in order to comply with the regulation. Those new models will bear an additional “OSM” code on their packaging to show that they are in compliance. There’s no word on when these new, compliant consoles will make their debut, but the regulation requirements impact any device sold in the EU after February 18, 2026.
The new regulation is intended to cut down on waste and overall detrimental environmental impact.
