Creating the card-based RPG Battle Suit Aces

Creating the card-based RPG Battle Suit Aces

Battle Chef Brigade developer Trinket Studios is back, this time with a card-based role-playing game called Battle Suit Aces. Card games and giant mechs are catnip for senior editor Bryant Francis, so we were pleased that Trinket Studios cofounders Tom Eastman and Ben Perez were game to swing by and chat about the making of this Outersloth-published game.

It turned out to not just be a tale of prototyping, iterating, and bugfixing, but also a race against the clock to recover the rights to Battle Chef Brigade from collapsing publisher Adult Swim Games. But with that race behind them, Eastman, Perez, and fellow cofounder Eric Huang could focus on creating a compelling game with an anime-inspired story you might have once watched on Adult Swim.

Listen to the full episode if you’re curious about how developers can use card game mechanics to represent big bot battles—and what makes for a good publisher/developer relationship.
